Talk: The Jellicoe Express [Brora] ...

18 October 2018

Starts: 19:30

The Jellicoe Express

Talk by Robert Foden

The Community Centre lounge at the rear of Brora Primary School in Johnstone Place, Brora.  Organised by Clyne Heritage. The meeting is open to all and there will be a raffle (donations always welcome).  Refreshments and admission are free.

A local Historian from Kirkwall in Orkney, Mr Foden has carried out extensive research into the World War One troop train, Jellicoe Express, named after the head of the Royal Navy, which ran daily between London and Thurso, passing through Brora, to take service personnel to and from the Scapa Flow naval base across the Pentland Firth in Orkney.  The entire journey took 22 hours and each train carried 600 men in cramped conditions.  A total of nearly half a million men were transported on the Jellicoe Express during the war and the service was revived again during the 2nd World War.

Information on the Society's activities can be found on its website: www.clyneheritage.com or on its Facebook and Twitter pages.
